Chrono Trigger is also a shining example of a game with multiple endings depending on your actions in the game. Not a good ending and an evil ending, just different endings.

It'd be interesting to see what you think of Final Fantasy 6 (FFIII in the USA), which came out in the same period. It's long been my favorite JRPG story.

Haters gonna Hate
Healers gonna Heal...

Seriously though, I've noticed over the years that White Wolf players (and ST's) tend to use the rules set to categorize themselves. The Mental/Physical/Social divide allows players to indicate if they are a "primarily social character" or not. It's actually a useful distinction for ST's as they have some idea as to what players want to do based on their build. If the majority of players have made Mental primary characters, it's a safe bet they're not looking to fight muggers in alleyways.

The NWOD Awakening Orders provide a similar break down; if someone is playing an Arrow, odds are he wants to fight something. If a Mysterium, he likely wants to go on an artifact hunt.

Just thought it was worth mentioning that in RPG's as opposed to computer games, the system used also creates unexpected confinement and emergent behaviour in the ST's as well as the players.

Interesting. I'm not terribly familiar with that game...is there an objective goal? It seems to me that giving out objective goals is one good way to let different interpretations of a game coexist and even stack up in comparison to one another. Instead of mindless debate about which style is better...if you really feel like competing, you can count up points, so to speak. (Or have a bar fight between a Werewolf and a Mage, but who's counting?)

Exactly. The more we rely on internal assumptions, the more the game experience drifts from what the designer had in mind. Granted, sometimes this can result in some interesting play patterns, but I noticed this a lot in games like Words with Friends. Some people play it like a vocabulary game, while others play it like a territory control game, and the two factions don't seem to like to play across playstyles while both claim they are playing the game "correctly."

Fantastic post, great way of looking at it! (It's been a while since I've seen the film, but I believe I can confirm that, yes, such a scene does indeed exist.)

I've been learning a lot about giving explicit rules in a game, though for me, it's more been an experience of "Wait...you mean that those rules in my head -didn't- telepathically transfer over to you? Darn." Expressing all the necessary facets of a ruleset is definitely an important part of communication that can grow over time.
